Dorronsoro: The architects behind Calahonda Sunset

Interview with Dorronsoro Arquitectos, the studio behind Calahonda Sunset: legacy, key projects and sustainability (SATE/ETICS, energy efficiency).

Dorronsoro Arquitectos is the architecture firm behind the new-build residential project in Calahonda known as Calahonda Sunset.

The studio has become a well-known name on the Costa del Sol thanks to its family heritage and continuous technological evolution. After starting in Madrid, the firm moved to Malaga in 1965 and has continued to grow within a fast-changing architectural landscape.

In this interview, we explore the studio’s story, landmark projects and sustainability approach, with Santiago and Ana Dorronsoro.

Q1: The studio’s history and evolution

The firm’s story mirrors that of a family studio rooted in the Costa del Sol. Three of the four siblings are architects and one is an IT professional—an increasingly relevant profile in today’s digitalised industry.

The studio’s move to Malaga in 1965 marked a key milestone. Over time, the next generation joined the practice, bringing diverse academic backgrounds (Seville, Madrid and Pamplona) and a culture of debate and collaboration.

Technology has evolved from technical drawing tools and tracing paper to AutoCAD, and more recently to Revit with richer project data integration.

Q2: Landmark projects

A major turning point was the Don Gonzalo building in Marbella, near the seafront—recognised for its architectural volume, attention to detail and integration into the local context, with large terraces oriented to gardens and sea views.

Following that project, the studio won a competition in Puerto Banus and developed Los Granados Banus, extending the concepts into gated residential complexes with shared amenities.

Another highlight is the Martiricos urban regeneration project in Malaga (67,000 m²) with a central park of around 30,000 m², recognised for sustainability-driven design.

  • Urban regeneration
  • Environmental protection
  • Energy efficiency
  • Social cohesion
  • More public open space

Q3: Sustainability and energy efficiency in Calahonda Sunset

For façade performance and building insulation, the project uses SATE (ETICS – External Thermal Insulation Composite System).

ETICS improves thermal insulation by fixing insulating material to the external wall surface, reducing energy losses through façades and supporting sustainability goals.
